Staff Data Scientist
Zocdoc
Our Mission
Healthcare should work for patients, but it doesn’t. In their time of need, they call down outdated insurance directories. Then wait on hold. Then wait weeks for the privilege of a visit. Then wait in a room solely designed for waiting. Then wait for a surprise bill. In any other consumer industry, the companies delivering such a poor customer experience would not survive. But in healthcare, patients lack market power. Which means they are expected to accept the unacceptable.
Zocdoc’s mission is to give power to the patient. To do that, we’ve built the leading healthcare marketplace that makes it easy to find and book in-person or virtual care in all 50 states, across +200 specialties and +12k insurance plans. By giving patients the ability to see and choose, we give them power. In doing so, we can make healthcare work like every other consumer sector, where businesses compete for customers, not the other way around. In time, this will drive quality up and prices down.
We’re 18 years old and the leader in our space, but we are still just getting started. If you like solving important, complex problems alongside deeply thoughtful, driven, and collaborative teammates, read on.
Job Purpose
The Practice Solutions team at Zocdoc is building a suite of SaaS products that empower healthcare providers to better manage scheduling, patient engagement, and utilization. This includes products such as Zo (our AI phone agent), the branded directory, third-party booking integrations, and client-facing analytics tools.
As the Staff Data Scientist, Practice Solutions, you will be a strategic technical leader who both generates actionable insights and enables others to deliver exceptional impact. You’ll design and scale analytical systems, mentor and upskill data scientists, and partner cross-functionally to define and execute data-driven strategies that shape Zocdoc’s provider products.
This role focuses not only on developing models and analyses yourself, but on building frameworks, mentoring talent, and establishing best practices that elevate the broader analytics function. Building production models is not a core part of this role.
Essential Responsibilities
- Partner with product and commercial partners to drive product & business strategy by translating insights into actionable recommendations.
- Identify, design, and guide the development of analytical models that drive insights into provider utilization, acquisition, retention, patient engagement and client ROI.
- Architect and execute experimentation and causal inference frameworks, including A/B testing design, quasi-experimental approaches (e.g., DiD, synthetic controls), and advanced causal inference methods such as propensity modeling or causal forests.
- Develop and apply statistical frameworks, and establish scalable systems and best practices to quantify the impact of product and commercial initiatives.
- Partner with Engineering to ensure data quality, feature availability, correct event instrumentation, and scalable data pipelines that enable trustworthy analysis and reporting.
- While this role does not have direct reports, it requires influencing across teams, mentoring analysts and data scientists, participating in recruitment and elevating the quality of analytical work across Zocdoc.
You’ll enjoy this role if you…
- Passionate about transforming healthcare through data. You love finding signal in the noise — turning complex data into insights that shape meaningful products
- Love mentoring and enabling teams to deliver scalable, high-impact work.
- Thrive at the intersection of business strategy, data science, and product innovation.
- Get energy from complex, ambiguous problems and can translate them into structured analytical solutions.
- Act as a force multiplier, where success is not only measured by what you build personally but also by the systems, capabilities, and clarity you create for others.
You’ll be successful in this role if you have...
- 8+ years of experience in data science, machine learning or related roles
- Proven success in developing LTV models, survival models, uplift models, or similar frameworks for customer prediction, targeting, and optimization.
- Expertise in SQL and Python (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, statsmodels) for data manipulation, analysis and statistical modeling.
- Deep knowledge of experimentation and causal inference, including statistical power analysis, experiment design, variance reduction techniques, and quasi-experimental methodologies.
- Strong communication skills, capable of influencing non-technical stakeholders
- Experience working in cross-functional product organizations
- Experience shaping and scaling analytics functions, not just building individual models
Nice to have...
- Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field such as Statistics, Economics, Applied Math
- Experience within a SaaS organization
