Overview

AI Labs is an innovation and incubation organization within Microsoft 365 Copilot. We drive frontier innovation for Office by turning bold ideas into working proofs, bringing a cross-application perspective and moving with agility. Our teams explore AI-native systems and experiences, rapidly prototype ideas, validate them with real users, and partner with product teams to bring proven concepts into production. Our work spans systemic intelligence, agentic experiences, and AI-native engineering, with a solid focus on creating meaningful customer and business impact.

Our culture

We will only achieve our mission of transforming how others work if we live our culture. We start with becoming learners in all things and apply that mindset to learning about our customers, being diverse and inclusive, working together as one, and, ultimately, making a difference in the world. In AI Labs, this also means operating with curiosity, prototyping quickly, learning from evidence, embracing responsible experimentation, and treating both successful outcomes and well-reasoned course corrections as valuable learning.

More about the Role

Building frontier AI experiences and platforms for Microsoft 365 presents broad and evolving engineering challenges. We work across applications, agents, models, data, and cloud services to turn ambiguous ideas into reliable, secure, and scalable prototypes and production-ready solutions.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead the design and implementation of complex AI-native systems, rapidly validate technical hypotheses, and help teams move from concept to working proof with high engineering quality. You will define architecture and design patterns for significant feature areas or subsystems, build critical implementations, and guide multiple engineers through execution. You will collaborate across engineering, product management, design, applied science, and partner product teams to evaluate customer value, technical feasibility, and a path to production. You will also help establish solid foundations for security, privacy, responsible AI, observability, evaluation, reliability, and cost efficiency from the earliest stages of incubation.

Our customer needs evolve rapidly, our systems are diverse, and our AI engineering challenges are broad. This allows engineers to continuously develop new subject matter expertise while helping the organization innovate with greater agility, technical depth, and customer focus.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
