The Name Resolution & IP Services (NRIPS) team provides foundational networking services that enable connectivity across Microsoft's global corporate environment. Our services support enterprise name resolution, IP address management, network automation, and core infrastructure relied upon by employees, devices, applications, and services worldwide.
We are seeking a Senior Service Engineer - DNS SME (Subject Matter Expert) to help design, operate, secure, and modernize Microsoft’s enterprise DNS, DHCP, and IP Address Management (DDI) platforms. This role combines deep technical expertise, operational ownership, and cross-team collaboration to deliver highly available and secure networking infrastructure on a global scale.

Responsibilities
Service Ownership
- Own the reliability, availability, and operational health of enterprise DNS, DHCP, and IPAM services.
- Participate in design, deployment, maintenance, and lifecycle management of DDI infrastructure.
- Drive operational excellence through automation, monitoring, and continuous service improvement.
- Reduce operational toil by improving tooling, telemetry, and operational processes.
DNS Engineering
- Design, implement, and support enterprise DNS solutions across hybrid and cloud environments.
- Troubleshoot complex DNS, networking, and service connectivity issues.
- Support authoritative and recursive DNS infrastructure and related name resolution services.
- Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to ensure successful service onboarding and integration.
Platform Modernization
- Participate in modernization initiatives involving Azure DNS, cloud networking, and DDI platform evolution.
- Develop automation and infrastructure-as-code solutions to improve service management.
- Support migration and consolidation efforts that improve scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Operational Excellence
- Participate in on-call rotations and live-site support activities.
- Lead incident investigations and root-cause analysis efforts.
- Drive implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Develop and maintain operational documentation, runbooks, and engineering standards.
Security & Compliance
- Identify and mitigate infrastructure risks through proactive engineering improvements.
- Ensure services meet compliance and operational requirements.
Collaboration & Leadership
- Work across networking, security, infrastructure, and engineering organizations.
- Mentor engineers and share technical expertise.
- Contribute to architectural reviews and technology evaluations.
- Influence technical decisions through strong engineering judgment and data-driven recommendations.

Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, or systems engineering OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred/Additional Qualifications:
- Experience designing, administering, or troubleshooting enterprise DNS services.
- Experience supporting production infrastructure in large-scale environments.
- Experience with networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, routing, load balancing, and network security.
- Experience with incident management, operational support, and problem resolution.
- Experience scripting or automating operational workflows using PowerShell, Python, or similar technologies.
- Deep technical expertise in Enterprise DNS, Windows DNS, DHCP, IP Address Management (IPAM), DNS64, Anycast DNS, Recursive DNS, Conditional Forwarders, Stub Zones, DNS Security, Azure DNS, Azure Private Resolver (or equivalent cloud-based DNS services).
- F5 BIG-IP DNS/GTM/LTM or equivalent platform.
- Experience leading cross-team infrastructure projects.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code and configuration management tools.
- Experience using data analytics and telemetry platforms to drive operational improvements.
- Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership across organizations.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
