Senior Reviewer, TVs & Audio, The Verge
Vox Media
WHO WE ARE
The Verge is an ambitious multimedia effort founded in 2011 to examine how technology will change life in the future for a massive mainstream audience.
The Verge is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.
As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
The Verge seeks an A/V product reviewer to cover televisions, headphones, and speakers. The candidate should have extensive experience explaining to readers what makes products good or bad. They must be a self-starter with a strong Rolodex of industry contacts, ready to jump on news, write buying guides, or whip up an analysis piece explaining why something that happened on their beat matters.
The ideal candidate will have photography skills to capture products they are reviewing, with particular experience capturing TVs. They’ll know when products are typically announced and who to call to prepare ahead of time. They’ll have reviewed all or most of the recent products on the beat.
In this role, you will:
- Bring your deep understanding of TVs and audio products to The Verge with the sharp, expert voice our readers expect.
- Have an ear for audio. Are you an audiophile? Can you explain how several sets of headphones or speakers sound? What makes one sound better than the rest?
- Review TVs, speakers, headphones: You must be able to facilitate shipping to and from your workplace and have the space to test TVs.
- Liveblog events, write news about new products, and analyze what makes them new and different.
- Be able to write clearly without having to rely on lists of specs. You need to tell The Verge’s readers why these specs matter.
- Ideally, you’ll have sourcing across the industry to help break news with scoops and exclusives on your beat.
- Work closely with The Verge’s video, photography, and podcasting teams to help amplify your reviews and voice on the site.
- Write buying guides to help our readers discern which products on your beat are the best. You’ll update older guides and help come up with ideas for new ones.
WHO YOU ARE
We’re looking for a whip-smart reviewer who knows The Verge voice and can help us continue to grow in the A/V space. You’ll have:
- 5+ years of experience reviewing products, calling them in, and working with companies to facilitate their return.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Product photography chops. You’ll need to capture pictures of the products you review.
- Experience working across teams, including with a news desk, social, photography, art, video, and podcasts.
- Contacts across all the major brands on the audio and TV beats.
- Ability to juggle multiple projects at once.
- Strong organizational skills. You must be able to keep your own calendar and stick to review deadlines.
If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
