WHO WE ARE

Eater, the national food publication with outlets across the country, is at the forefront of reporting on the restaurant industry, shaping food culture with its award-winning journalism and programming, and telling people where to eat with its beloved maps and guides.

Eater is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Eater is looking for an experienced reporter and editor to lead its San Francisco site, one of its marquee publications. The Eater SF editor guides day-to-day coverage, while managing and guiding a team of at least deputy editor. The editor is responsible for collaborating with the wider Eater network and establishing a clear grounding vision for the site that helps steer and focus the trajectory of the team’s coverage. Special attention should be given to the impact and relevance in Bay Area communities by continuing to drive conversations about the restaurant industry and dining culture in a fast-paced, competitive market.

Daily programming includes a mix of originally reported news stories and features, as well as service-focused maps and guides. The editor is also responsible for audience growth and engagement. Stories should not all focus on one area or subject: The editor should have the range to cover the bar and hospitality industries, policy changes, and labor and social justice stories. The role also includes assigning, editing, and packaging freelance pieces; taking ownership of key service maps like the Eater 38; and participating in broader editorial brand initiatives such as high-touch packages.

In partnership with your Cities Manager and team, the Eater SF editor will:

  • Have a vision of the food and restaurant culture in San Francisco, the East Bay, and the greater Bay Area and Eater’s place in it
  • Manage a team of at least one full- or part-time editor or reporter
  • Write, edit, or oversee all of the site’s stories — daily news, maps, and service pieces, features, and other reporting
  • Build on the existing editorial calendar, including planning longer lead features, and trend stories, as well as participate in occasional packages or projects
  • Oversee production and strategy for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and newsletters for Eater SF, keeping in line with Eater's standards
  • Edit and manage a small group of freelancers, and periodically recruit and develop new writers and contributors to ensure a diverse mix of voices reflecting the demographics of your city
  • Ensure all copy meets our style guide and editorial standards
  • Ensure all posts are SEO-optimized
  • Track openings and develop sources including chefs, restaurateurs, relevant spokespeople, and alternative sources for coverage as needed
  • Participate in cross-brand promotional efforts and collaboration with the national Eater.com team as communicated by other team managers when needed
  • Occasionally appear on panels, radio, and other public appearances as appropriate for the brand

WHO YOU ARE

  • 3-5 years as an experienced reporter particularly in breaking daily news, developing sources, covering a beat, and editing other writers
  • 2 years of experience editing and assigning
  • A strong grasp of and appreciation for service journalism
  • A vision for ambitious storytelling, including features and thesis-driven projects and packages
  • A drive to continue Eater’s reputation as the number one source furthering the conversations about the restaurant world in your city through proactive narratives that drive the news cycle
  • Strong news judgment, reporting accuracy, and attention to detail, plus a careful eye for story packaging
  • Ability to adapt and strategize using data-driven tools and feedback
  • Experience managing and providing mentorship and meaningful feedback to a team
  • Comfort with cold calling and a sense of urgency surrounding the fast pace of digital news
  • Deep interest in digital headline writing, SEO/analytics, and social media publishing
  • Someone who thrives when building and expanding on existing editorial calendars, news-breaking processes, and internal team systems
  • Attention to detail, news judgment, story packaging, and a careful eye for accuracy
  • Alignment with Vox Media Values
  • A love for restaurants and knowledge of the local scene and at the very least a voracious hunger to become an expert in the industry

Bonus points for:

  • Experience covering business, real estate, the restaurant industry, or legal matters
  • Experience with photography and article layout
  • Experience and/or interest in social video
  • Experience with writing and/or editing long-lead, high-touch feature stories
