About the Company

Verdagy is creating a new class of hydrogen electrolyzers that will help decarbonize some of the most difficult to abate sectors of our global economy. Our approach is to design large modular skid-mounted hydrogen electrolyzers that will be used to architect large-scale hydrogen production plants. The Verdagy team is a dedicated and innovative group of forward thinkers looking to dramatically change the hydrogen electrolyzer industry. Verdagy is a spinoff of green chemistry pioneer Chemetry Corporation. Our years of experience in electrochemistry and plant operations and engineering have provided us an opportunity to rapidly commercialize our innovative and novel approach to hydrogen electrolysis. We are backed by an incredible group of financial investors, renewable energy developers and Fortune 100 corporations. Our investor/partners are leading companies in the petro-chemical, industrial chemicals, energy infrastructure and mining industries, all sharing an extraordinary desire to deeply decarbonize their businesses at very large scale. This is where Verdagy’s membrane-based, large aspect ratio cells, running at high current densities provides the scale solution needed for industrial decarbonization. Verdagy operates offices, laboratory and pilot plant facilities in Moss Landing, California, to further commercialize this technology platform.

About the Role

In this role, you will apply your expertise to support the development of Verdagy’s next generation electrolyzer product. Responsibilities include leading the design, construction, commissioning and operational support of a new demonstration plant. In parallel with the demonstration-scale implementation, you will contribute to the technology scale-up to a commercial product design and support commercial product engineering activities such as FEED studies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, construction and commissioning of a first-of-a-kind hydrogen electrolyzer demonstration plant and support commercial-scale process engineering activities.
  • Develop and modify P&IDs, PFDs, Heat and Material Balances, Process Simulations, Control Philosophies, Interlock Descriptions, Standard Operating Procedures and Utility Specifications.
  • Specify Equipment, Piping Systems, Pumps, Control Valves and Instrumentation and serve as technical point of contact with vendors to obtain quotations.
  • Develop expertise in codes and standards applicable to hydrogen electrolyzers and plants, ensure compliance with relevant requirements, and take a leading role in driving product certification efforts.
  • Perform process calculations and analyses to support process safety, equipment scale-up and performance tracking.
  • Build expertise in the safe design of H₂ and O₂ systems and support the implementation of best practices for hydrogen and oxygen plant safety.
  • Support demonstration and pilot plant operations to de-risk the product, including component validation, generation of model correlations, and validation of novel process concepts.
  • Interface with component vendors and system fabricators to develop understanding of cost-performance tradeoffs, then work with those vendors to source optimized components and subsystems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, or similar.
  • 3+ years industry experience in chemical processing industries.
  • Demonstrated experience with PFDs, P&IDs, Management of Change, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) is a must.
  • Hands-on field experience with the engineering, design, procurement, and construction of process systems (preferably pilot scale and/or modular based system).
  • Plant certification, compliance, and safety per ISO, API, NFPA, IEC, UL and other codes. Specific experience with safe design of H2 and O2 plants preferred.
  • History of innovation, system optimization, and cost reduction – ideally both during the design phase and as part of continuous improvement of commercialized processes.
  • Demonstrated engineering leadership role and ability to strategically guide development activities within and across functions.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of electrochemical processes such as hydrogen electrolyzers or chlor alkali plants.
  • Previous experience with other hydrogen technologies.
  • Experience with managing pilot scale projects.
  • Design, fabrication, and deployment of modular process skids, pilot plants, and first of a kind operations.
  • Process modeling and cost modeling with software like ChemCAD, Aspen HYSYS, Matlab, etc.
  • Familiarity with the properties and handling requirements of hydrogen, oxygen, and caustic.
  • Startup experience preferred; excited to be part of a small team that is making a difference.
  • Experience in renewable energy, climate tech, or chemical industries preferred.
  • Passion for decarbonization highly preferred.
