Spiritus is a climate tech company at the forefront of Direct-Air-Capture (DAC) technology. With a dedication to innovation and sustainable stewardship of our environment, Spiritus has crafted a unique solution that achieves rapid sorption and desorption rates at a fraction of the sorbent cost versus state-of-the-art sorbents under passive DAC conditions. The company's approach combines the Spiritus Sorbent and the Spiritus Carbon Orchard, offering a scalable and modular system for low-cost DAC and sequestration (DAC+S). Spiritus is committed to making carbon removal an accessible and practical tool in the global fight against climate change.

Spiritus is seeking a Materials R&D Scientist to accelerate the development of sorbent materials. The role will have responsibility for developing synthetic methods to enhance critical sorbent performance characteristics, develop analytical methods and QA/QC diagnostics, and ensure the sorbent is cost-effective, durable, and manufacturable. The position will be a key member of the materials development team and report directly to the CTO.

The candidate will:

  • Work as part of a team in a fast paced rapidly changing environment to establish research direction and priorities.
  • Develop scalable and manufacturable synthetic methods to improve sorbent performance characteristics.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly develop and explore R&D concepts.
  • Interface with internal engineering resources and partners to refine/improve DAC system concepts.
  • Interface with the Director of Manufacturing and manufacturing resources to refine and improve sorbent manufacturability, quality, and cost.
  • Work as part of a team to develop diagnostics for sorbent characterization, and rational manufacturing quality assurance and control.

The candidate will have:

  • Experience in polymer chemistry, synthetic organic, and/or main group chemistry.
  • Experience in materials development, characterization, and manufacturing.
  • A PhD in chemistry, materials science, or a suitable combination of education and experience.
