About the role

Neutron is Rocket Lab’s new, medium-lift, reusable launch vehicle currently under development. The Neutron Avionics department is responsible for the delivery of all avionics systems across the vehicle, including integrated avionics hardware, Flight Software and Flight Safety Systems.

The Team Lead – Neutron Avionics Systems is the subject matter expert and people leader for the Neutron Avionics Systems team – a hands-on engineering group spanning multiple domains including Electrical Power Systems, Flight Computers, Networking, Harnessing, Remote I/O Interfaces, Data Acquisition, Sensing, Actuation and Control. The Avionics Systems team is responsible for the high-level design and architecture of these subsystems, defining their functional and performance requirements, carrying out proof of concept testing, prototyping, system integration, and Integrated Systems Testing (IST).

A close working relationship with PCB designers and qualification engineers in the Avionics Hardware team will be essential throughout Neutron’s development phase. Similarly, production and operations teams will be key collaborators leading up to first flight and beyond.

Team leadership responsibilities include oversight and guidance of team members’ individual projects, providing clear feedback during design and review, being pro-active in the career development of staff, and fostering a high-performance culture based on ownership, empowerment, and individual accountability.


Essential skills
  • High proficiency in electronics principles, including power electronics, communication systems (e.g RS-422, SPI, Ethernet, CAN bus), signal integrity, and grounding.
  • Extensive understanding of instrumentation, interfaces, and sensors.
  • Good understanding of software development processes.
  • Good understanding of formal Systems Engineering processes and tools.
  • Understanding of electrical schematics and electronics manufacturing to analyze and improve system test coverage.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and an aptitude for technical guidance and mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Demonstrated engineering judgement, looking at all available options to solve a problem.
  • Demonstrated ability to decompose complex systems into well-defined subsystems with clear requirements.
  • The ability to function as a technical contributor while managing a team.
  • The ability to mentor junior engineers.
  • Effective at collaborating across teams and departments.


Desirable

  • Experience Python, C/C++ and the SDLC in general
  • Project / Program Management skills
