Fusion Interns

Madison, WI

We’re not just looking for physicists, we’re looking for bright, curious problem-solvers ready to help shape the future of fusion energy!

Interns at Realta Fusion will contribute to one of several exciting areas of work:

  • Experimental Research
  • Theory and Modeling Research
  • Engineering and Design
  • Other Exceptional Candidates

Experimental Research Interns

  • Assist with the construction, installation, and operation of Realta contracted projects on the Wisconsin High-temperature superconducting Axisymmetric Mirror (WHAM) experiment.
  • Interns can expect to gain experience of working safely with:
    • high vacuum systems
    • pulsed power hardware
    • control system software
    • high-temperature superconducting magnets
    • fusion specific plasma diagnostics

Theory and Modeling Research Interns

  • Work with the RealTwin suite of modeling tools, focused on the development of a digital twin of the WHAM experiment.
  • Utilize and contribute to advanced modeling codes, including VPIC, WarpX, Gkeyll, CQL3D, and other high-performance computing tools.
  • Gain hands-on experience in Python, Julia, Fortran, shell scripting, and other programming languages.

Engineering and Design Interns

  • Assist with Multiphysics simulations, radiation transport and activation studies, MHD studies of flowing liquid metals, and more.
  • Projects will be tailored to the applicant’s interest and skills.

Other Exceptional Interns

We also welcome applications from students in related disciplines who bring unique skills or perspectives that can contribute to Realta’s mission. This may include areas such as:

  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Statistics

Applications are open through Friday, January 30, 2026. Apply early!

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to work on-site at either the Realta Fusion office (Madison, WI) or the Physical Sciences Laboratory (near Stoughton, WI).
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Approximately two years away from entering the workforce (e.g., rising junior or equivalent academic standing).
  • Demonstrated strong work habits and a commitment to safety.

Internship Timeframe

  • Summer 2026 internship at the Physical Sciences Laboratory and Realta Fusion Madison office between May and August 2026 (start/end dates are flexible). On-site work is required.
  • Full-time (40 hours/week) internship.
  • If the internship is successful and scheduling allows, there may be an opportunity to continue part-time during the academic year.
