Process Engineer, Member of Technical Staff
QuantumScape
QuantumScape is on a mission to transform energy storage with solid-state lithium-metal battery technology. The company’s next-generation batteries are designed to enable greater energy density, faster charging and enhanced safety to support the transition away from legacy energy sources toward a lower carbon future.
About the team: The Cell Development team is a diverse group of scientists and engineers responsible for transitioning manufacturing processes to automated, high-volume production. The team's primary objective is to work with R&D and automation teams to develop and refine production methodologies, ensuring they are robust, repeatable, and scalable for automated manufacturing. The team prides itself on flexibility and adaptability working on the forefront of battery technology.
What we need: We are seeking a highly motivated individual to support our Cell Development team. As a Process Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, validation, and optimization of hardware processes for automated production. Collaborating closely with R&D and automation teams, you will integrate and commission new equipment while proactively identifying hardware bottlenecks and mechanical failure points. You will perform deep-dive troubleshooting and implement data-driven hardware modifications to drive continuous yield improvements. A strong mechanical background and a disciplined, analytical disposition are essential for success in this position.
What You’ll do:
- Innovate and refine manufacturing processes for automated cell production
- Collaborate with R&D and automation teams to ensure process specifications and performance targets are met
- Resolve process failures and contribute to root cause analysis and corrective actions directly on the production floor
- Analyze production data to monitor process stability and provide evidence for equipment and yield improvements
- Prepare and present high-quality technical reports to internal and external stakeholders
Skills You’ll Need:
- You have a sound understanding of mechanical principles
- You are proficient in statistical analysis and data visualization tools (e.g., JMP or Python) to drive Design of Experiments (DOE) and Root Cause Analysis
- You are a self-starter with a track record of acquiring and applying new skills to achieve results
- You thrive in fast-paced settings and adapt quickly to shifting priorities
- You are a strong communicator who enjoys collaborating to solve complex challenges
- MS in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering (or related STEM field), or a BS with a minimum of 2 years of hands-on R&D experience.
Nice to have:
- Hands-on research experience in device assembly from battery, semiconductor, or other high-volume/high-precision manufacturing industry
- Familiarity with electrochemistry or energy storage-related technologies
Physical requirements:
- Work is performed in a dry room, fume hood, lab area, or glovebox requiring the use of fine motor skills
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
- Reaching and twisting motions with hands
- Lifting up to 25 lbs
ONSITE: This position is required to work onsite 5 days per week to meet the minimum essential duties and requirements of this position. As an on-site R&D and manufacturing operations organization, in-person face to face interaction is essential to building authentic relationships, trust, teamwork, and collaboration.
Compensation & Benefits: Expected salary range for this role is from $101,900 to $141,800, and a final salary will be determined by the candidate's experience and educational background.
