We already have a trove of clinical data demonstrating the promise of our technology, and now Openwater is the world’s first open-source, open-patent, open-clinical-data, and open-safety-sharing company, centered on the new idea of the Silicon Hospital.

Position overview:

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Open-Source Business Strategy to lead and expand our open-source hardware and services initiatives. This role is pivotal in identifying key trends and opportunities, driving strategic growth, fostering community engagement, and building sustainable business models around open-source hardware and associated services, including safety data sharing and efficacy data sharing. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in open-source ecosystems, business development, and the intersection of technology and life sciences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a visionary strategy for open-source hardware and services aligned with organizational goals.
  • Champion the integration of open-source principles across all business functions, ensuring alignment with product, legal, and operational teams.
  • Build and nurture partnerships with global open-source communities to drive innovation and collaboration.
  • Act as a thought leader in the industry by representing the organization at conferences, forums, and events.
  • Business Development
  • Identify opportunities for revenue generation.
  • Collaborate with engineering, research, product, and commercial teams to create commercially viable offerings based on open-source hardware.
  • Position the organization as a leader in industry-specific open-source initiatives by leveraging market insights and emerging trends.

. Community Building

  • Foster relationships with the global open-source community to promote adoption of the company’s hardware and services.
  • Act as a bridge between internal teams and external stakeholders to incorporate community feedback into strategic decisions.
  • Enhance the company’s reputation within the open-source ecosystem through active participation in collaborations and partnerships.
  • Operational Excellence
  • Establish governance frameworks for open-source contributions and usage within the organization.
  • In collaboration with the Quality and Regulatory team, ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards across all operations.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to streamline processes for developing and deploying open-source solutions effectively.
  • Qualifications & Required Skills & Experience
  • Proven track record in leading open-source initiatives or businesses, preferably within hardware or life sciences domains.
  • Strong understanding of open-source ecosystems, including governance models, licensing frameworks, and community dynamics.
  • Extensive experience in business development or commercialization of innovative technologies.
  • Familiarity with clinical research processes, potentially including pre-clinical, lab-on-a-chip, organoid and human models.
  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams such as engineering, legal, marketing, and research.
  • Demonstrated success in driving large-scale innovation projects or organizational transformation initiatives.

  • Knowledge of data governance processes related to healthcare or biological research data.
  • Strong communication skills for articulating complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
