About The Role
The Field Service Engineer I (FSE I) is an entry-level technical role responsible for supporting the service, maintenance, and basic repair of Opentrons’ liquid-handling robotics systems. As an FSE I, you will contribute to delivering a seamless customer experience by ensuring our instruments operate reliably within the Opentrons ecosystem. You will work closely with senior engineers and the broader Service & Support team while developing your technical skills in laboratory automation, robotics, and customer service. This role requires strong communication skills, organizational skills, a willingness to learn, and a customer-focused mindset.

This is a remote, field-based position with significant travel across the UK and Europe, with occasional travel outside the region based on business needs. We are seeking applicants in Germany who can speak English plus the local language. Field Service Engineers report directly to the Manager of Field Applications Scientists and Field Service Engineers, Europe.

What You Would Do

  • Travel to customer sites to perform service on Opentrons robotic platforms, including installation, preventive maintenance, calibration, and repairs.
  • Conduct on-site evaluations to diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and software-related issues.
  • Document all service activities and findings clearly and accurately in applicable systems.
  • Support troubleshooting efforts for mechanical, electrical, and software-related issues—independently resolving basic problems and escalating more complex issues to senior engineers.
  • Schedule and manage installations, maintenance, repairs, and follow-up service activities with guidance from Service and Support leadership.
  • Maintain high service quality and professionalism while representing Opentrons in the field.
  • Travel 70-75% or more to meet business needs.

Education

Who We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Engineering, or a related major required.
  • Equivalent technical experience may be considered.

Experience

  • 1–2 years of experience in a customer-facing technical role, preferably within life sciences, biotechnology, or laboratory equipment servicing.
  • Exposure to laboratory automation or liquid-handling systems is a plus.
  • Experience with Python, GitHub, or version control tools is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM tools is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Foundational understanding of troubleshooting automated instrumentation; willingness to learn liquid-handling robotics in depth
  • Basic familiarity with interpreting or debugging code; knowledge of Python is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in hands-on technical work
  • Fluent language skills in both English and German
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to learn quickly, follow established processes, and work both independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency with Google Suite or comparable software

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Fast-paced environment with a high volume of service requests and dynamic scheduling.
  • 60-75%+ overnight travel required, with additional travel possible to meet business demands.
  • The candidate must live near an international airport.
  • Some physical effort is required, including lifting and installing robotic instruments and associated components.

Compensation: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between €45000 and €57000 per year. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience. We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including bonus and full range of medical, financial, various paid time off benefits, dependent on the position offered. Following employment, growth beyond the hiring range is possible based on performance.
