About the Role

We’re looking for a Data Scientist to join OpenAI’s Economic Research team with a dotted line report to the Ideas & Insights team. In this role, you’ll analyze how AI is reshaping the economy—impacting jobs, productivity, and industries worldwide. You’ll work closely with economists, our editorial team, and cross-functional partners to explore questions like: How does AI adoption affect labor markets? How should we think about the economic value of AI tools? You’ll also proactively flag trends and notable developments in ChatGPT usage for use with policy audiences. This is a hands-on role involving data analysis, literature review, and building insights that guide OpenAI’s strategy and contribute to the global conversation on AI economics.

This role can be based in San Francisco, CA, New York, NY or Washington, DC. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Conducting data analysis using internal and external datasets to assess AI’s impact on labor markets, productivity, and adoption.

  • Collaborating with economists, content creators, other data scientists, and other stakeholders to co-define research questions and develop analytical plans.

  • Building visualizations and dashboards to communicate insights clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Reviewing, validating, and fact-checking analyses produced by other team members.

We’re looking for someone with:

Required:

  • Strong proficiency in SQL and programming languages such as Python or R.

  • Solid foundation in data analysis, statistical inference, and visualization.

  • Ability to synthesize findings into clear written deliverables and presentations for diverse audiences.

  • Passion for telling the story of AI and society through data in real time.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working in data science.

Preferred:

  • Background in economic analysis, such as a degree in economics, research assistant experience, or prior work on economics-focused projects.

  • Experience collaborating with economists or economics research teams.

  • Experience in working with editorial teams to communicate publicly about research findings.
