OpenAI aims to hire, engage, and retain world-class talent to safely build and deploy universally beneficial Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The Global Employee Relations team is a newly formed, high-impact Center of Excellence within the People team. We provide high-touch, white-glove subject-matter expertise and risk mitigation in employee relations, workplace investigations, policy development, and strategic guidance and support for high-stakes, complex, and highly sensitive employee matters across OpenAI's global offices.

About the role

As a Senior Program Manager on the Global Employee Relations team, you will be at the forefront of shaping and executing global employee relations strategies and people policies that are integral to OpenAI’s culture, mission, and values. Your role is pivotal in fostering a fair, inclusive, and productive work environment across our global operations. With a human-centric approach, you will drive the development and refinement of policies and processes, ensuring they are not only efficient but also empathetic to the needs of our employees. Collaborating closely with HR, Legal, and cross-functional teams, you will initiate impactful Employee Relations programs and uphold the high-touch, white-glove service standard that defines our commitment to excellence and integrity.

You’ll have several responsibilities, including:

  • Developing and managing employee relations programs and initiatives that align with OpenAI’s culture, mission, and values.

  • Overseeing the implementation and management of the ER case management system, ensuring accurate documentation and tracking of cases.

  • Collaborating with HRBPs and legal teams to develop and update people policies, ensuring compliance with local and international regulations.

  • Analyzing trends and metrics to develop solutions, programs, and policies.

  • Providing expert guidance and support to managers and employees on policy interpretation.

  • Maintaining a high level of discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive employee information and cases.

We’ll look for these qualities, experience, and skills:

  • 7+ years of experience in employee relations, employment law, or HR policy and compliance, with a focus on program management and policy development.

    • Paralegal experience or additional education in employment law is a plus.

  • Proven track record of managing complex HR programs or projects, focusing on policy development and implementation.

  • Strong knowledge of employment law and regulations, with the ability to ensure compliance across various jurisdictions.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives, drive change, and influence decision-making at all organizational levels.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with keen attention to detail.

  • Proficiency in HR information systems and case management tools.

  • Capability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing organizational needs in a fast-paced environment.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly and effectively convey complex information.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, enabling you to build trust, rapport, and influence with executives, senior leaders, management, and employees at all levels.

  • A data-driven, proactive, and innovative mindset, with a dedication to continuous improvement.

Location and Workplace

This role is based in the Mission Bay, San Francisco, CA office. We use a hybrid work model: three days in the office per week with optional work from home on Thursdays and Fridays. We offer relocation assistance to new employees.

Our open-plan offices have height-adjustable desks, conference rooms, phone booths, well-stocked kitchens full of snacks and drinks, three in-house prepared meals daily, a private outdoor space for working in the sun or socializing, nap rooms, private bike storage, and more.
