Job Description

Oobli is searching for a hands-on Scientist to join our Analytical Sciences team. This role is focused on establishing and maintaining HPLC and MS methods for the quantitation and identification of proteins in samples from all stages of our sweet protein platform from strain engineering through final purified ingredient. The Analytical Sciences team supports core research and development, scale-up and commercialization of our sweet protein ingredients and food products. The ideal candidate will have a background in analytical chemistry or biochemistry with demonstrated expertise in HPLC for repeatable quantitation of proteins in various matrices and characterization of proteins by mass spectrometry. Experience with analytical chemistry techniques for characterizing the functionality of proteins or measuring other non-protein analytes is also desirable. This position will report to the Director of Data Quality and Analytics.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Develop analytical methods and workflows to identify, characterize, and quantify proteins in complex bioprocess matrices. Techniques include (but are not limited) to HPLC/UHPLC, LC-MS
  • Demonstrate leadership in routine analytical operations including daily sample processing of submissions from Strain Engineering, Fermentation, Downstream Processing, and Production.
  • Demonstrate confidence in maintaining and troubleshooting analytical equipment and proactivity in implementing solutions and improvements
  • Work closely and collaboratively with analytical team members to coordinate time and instrument resources between routine analytics and method development needed to support R&D initiatives
  • Utilize chromatography data systems, ELN and cloud-based database tool for managing the sample queue/ requests, documenting method development and experimental results
  • Comfortably navigate manual and automated data analysis workflows for routine reporting and statistical process control.
  • Document and share findings through technical reports, oral presentations, and project updates
  • Communicate and share ideas frequently within the analytical team and with other R&D teams
  • Scope and manage analytical and related cross-functional projects.

Professional Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or biological sciences with 5+ years of relevant work experience or Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of work experience
  • Expertise in analytical method development with an emphasis on HPLC-based methods supporting protein materials
  • Additional methods of analysis for other molecules from plant- and fermentation-based processes including both fermentation media components and metabolites strongly preferred
  • Some management experience desirable
  • Demonstrated technical project management and strategic planning skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; outstanding written and verbal communication
  • Entrepreneurial spirit; flexibility and adaptability to meet the dynamic needs of a small company environment
  • Self-motivation to explore and discuss scientific problems, brainstorm possible solutions and take action
