Loyal is a clinical-stage veterinary medicine company developing drugs intended to extend the lifespan and healthspan of dogs. Our mission is to help dogs live longer, healthier lives.
We’ve already achieved significant milestones on our path to earning FDA approval for the first lifespan extension drug for any species. We have three products in our pipeline and are on track to bring the first product to market in 2025.
Loyal is a well-funded startup in growth mode. Our team includes scientists, veterinarians, engineers, operators, and creatives. This role will play a key role in supporting our growth strategies.
You will be reporting to our CEO, Celine Halioua.
Job Summary
The Chief of Staff is responsible for optimizing the operations of the CEO team and executing on the priorities of the CEO, whatever they may be in a given month. Working on a wide range of special projects including building out new functions at Loyal.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Be the right hand (and left hand!) to the Founder/CEO, Celine. The ideal candidate will mind meld, effectively doubling her capacity.
- Be “forward deployed” - create new teams 0 -> 1, jump into existing teams and help fix problem areas, help bandwidth-constrained teams scale while hiring, etc.
- Lead company-wide goal-setting exercise, including collaboration with functional leads to develop a deep understanding of their specific considerations, iteration with executive team and CEO, pressure testing with examples, developing execution plan, championing rollout and identifying paths when obstacles are encountered.
- Assist in developing, implementing and communicating policies and best practices that support effective team collaboration and align operational practices with Loyal’s values and long-term goals. For example, “communications in the open”, our slack comms philosophy.
- Work closely with Celine and have the ability to have healthy discord while following the values of Loyal.
- Have the ability to triage situations and bring solutions to the table.
- Prepare board decks, memos and investor update emails.
- Prepare internal comms: decks for all paws (all hands), company workshops, etc.
- Keep on track of core company activities; supporting key internal meetings.
- Support and shadow Celine working on all things fundraising, even the not so exciting parts of the work.
- There is some more administrative work in this role:
- To do list management and triage
- Close collaboration with Celine’s EA
- Email triage, some email writing as needed
Experience and Characteristics
- 5-10 years of experience, with some executive leadership experience
- “Zero to one” experience in a high growth startup environment - ability to stand up “v1” processes quickly, followed by rapid cycles of test/iterate effectively incorporating feedback from prior cycles
- Excellent at and enjoy bringing order to chaos
- Ability to jump into new disciplines and reliably surface the most critical issues with thorough research, including seeking additional expertise when appropriate
- Strong judgment and leadership ability, can be trusted to appropriately prioritize and assign the right level of urgency to problems that surface
- Ability to “influence without authority” and collaborate effectively with all team members
- Ability to be a thought partner to executives by structuring and solving complex problems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent project management skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a rapidly changing environment with competing priorities
- Pragmatic and logical in thinking and decision making - “facts first”

- High EQ, you can read a room, navigate the nuances of representing the CEO, and build influence with soft power and strong relationships
- Concise communicator, you can convey the important information clearly and quickly

- Comfortable with numbers, you are good at quantitative reasoning and modeling
- Highly organized, you are able to track many disparate things at once
- Strong preference to someone based in or willing to move to San Francisco
- Position is remote but with frequent in-person time with the CEO.
