About Loyal

Loyal is a clinical-stage veterinary medicine company developing drugs intended to extend the lifespan and healthspan of dogs. In other words, our mission is to help dogs live longer, healthier lives.

We’ve already achieved significant milestones on our path to gaining FDA approval for the first lifespan extension drug for any species. We have three products in our pipeline and are on track to bring the first product to market in 2025.

Loyal is a well-funded startup in growth mode. Our team includes scientists, veterinarians, engineers, operators, and creatives. This role will play a key role in supporting our growth strategies.

About the role

Loyal is less than 12 months away from the projected launch of our first product. We’re seeking an Senior Financial Analyst to own the company’s financial model, partner with department leads to manage budgets and track variances, and run scenario analyses.

Your work will ensure the management team has accurate, real time information to protect the financial health of the company and support major strategic decisions.

This role is for a first-principles thinker with robust three-statement modeling skills, strong written and oral communication, and enthusiasm to gain exposure to all aspects of finance and business operations.

You will be reporting to our VP of Finance, Danielle Matsumoto.

Your daily work will include:

  • Primary ownership of company-wide forecast model and budget vs. actuals analysis and reporting.
  • Partner with department leads to develop robust financial targets, key metrics, and budgets.
  • Work with the business, accounting, and data engineering to provide visibility into financial performance and operational key performance indicators.
  • Run scenario analysis to inform major decisions. (e.g. pricing, distribution strategy, inventory management, insourcing vs. outsourcing, partnerships)
  • Identify and chase down opportunities to grow profits, reduce costs, and manage risks.
  • Special projects to support Finance Operations, Treasury, Tax, and Investor Relations, as needed.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in investment banking, equity research, private equity, or management consulting
  • Excellent three-statement modeling ability
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong understanding of key accounting concepts - e.g. working capital, accruals
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Extremely curious with the ability to view the business with an executive mindset

While not required, we’d be especially excited if you:

  • Are comfortable using PowerQuery, PowerPivot, and/or SQL to consolidate and analyze data
  • Have 2+ years of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) experience at a high growth company, especially in the pet, animal health, or pharma industries
  • Are a finance and strategy nerd who loves animals

How you work and think:

  • Ready to tackle a wide range of challenges, from messy data/processes to needing to make strategic business decisions with limited information
  • Humble and willing to learn from anyone and any task
  • Self-starter who is always looking to push the ball forward
  • Able to work independently with light supervision
  • Professional and clear communicator

Why you might not like this role:

  • You operate best when asked to run processes you have inherited on a predictable, standardized schedule. In this role you’ll be building those processes yourself (and then sometimes tearing them apart 6 months later when we need to grow with the business.)
  • You prefer a highly structured training and mentorship program, rather than learning on the job.
  • You get frustrated working with people with different academic and professional backgrounds from yourself. In this role you’ll need to collaborate with and influence team members with a wide range of expertise who may not know what “EBITDA”, “TAM” or “CAC” mean.

Loyal Benefits:

  • Full-coverage health insurance — medical, dental and vision — for you and your dependents
  • $1,000 home office equipment stipend
  • $1,200/year learning budget for books, courses, etc.
  • $250/month wellness budget for gym, cleaners, spa, food, etc.
  • All 3-day weekends are turned into 4-day weekends 🎉
  • Unlimited vacation and paid holidays
  • Paw-ternity leave — adopt a dog and get a day off with your new family member 🐶
  • Annual company retreat at beautiful locations across the country (recently: Tahoe, Cape Cod)
  • Competitive salary
  • Company equity options grant for new hires
