Job description

Staff Safety Assurance Engineer, Robot Safety
San Carlos, CA (on-site)

About 1X
We build humanoid robots that work alongside people to solve labor shortages and create abundance.

The Role
As a Staff Safety Assurance Engineer, you will own the end-to-end safety assurance argument for the Neo robot platform. This role ensures that all safety work is integrated into a coherent, complete, and defensible safety case that supports deployment decisions. You’ll play a mission-critical role in shaping world-first safety assurance practices for humanoid robots designed for home environments. You will report to the Director of Robot Safety.

You Will

  • Own and maintain the full safety case, including claims, arguments, assumptions, and supporting evidence

  • Evaluate the completeness, consistency, and strength of evidence supporting key safety claims

  • Assess confidence, uncertainty, coverage limitations, and assumptions across diverse deployment conditions

  • Lead deployment readiness assessments and clearly present risk framing to leadership

  • Maintain the safety case as system behavior, autonomy, and and operating conditions evolve

  • Support post-deployment monitoring of safety-relevant field data

  • Provide grounded input to inform risk acceptance decisions

  • Act as an independent, constructive reviewer and challenger of safety arguments

Job requirements

Must Have

  • B.S. or higher in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field

  • 10+ years of experience delivering safety-critical products (robotics, autonomous vehicles, medical devices, aerospace, or industrial automation), with direct work in safety assurance, system safety, or safety case development

  • Proven experience owning safety cases for systems operating around people

  • Deep understanding of functional safety, verification & validation, and compliance

  • Ability to reason about residual risk, confidence, and uncertainty

  • Experience evaluating autonomous, complex, or learning-enabled systems

  • Strong working knowledge of robotics and autonomy safety standards (e.g. UL 4600, IEC 61508, ISO 26262, ISO 21448)

  • Demonstrated ability to influence high-stakes decisions without formal authority

  • Excellent technical communication skills, including written safety arguments and executive-level briefings

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience assessing safety evidence derived from large-scale simulation or field data

  • Understanding of real-world safety monitoring, incident response, and feedback loops

Experience contributing towards the development of safety confidence metrics

Benefits & Compensation

  • Salary Range: $170k-$259k+ Equity

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Paid time off and holidays
