Hermeus is a venture-backed defense aviation company reclaiming the lost art of rapid iterative prototyping to build the fastest aircraft in the world today. By prioritizing relentless hardware iteration, we deliver high-speed systems at the pace of the modern battlefield. We work with the Department of War to provide the high-speed capabilities our nation and its allies need to maintain a durable, asymmetric advantage.

As a Senior Power Electronics Electrical Engineer you will be responsible for development of electrical power architectures and components for next-generation supersonic and hypersonic aircraft. This role involves end-to-end ownership of flight hardware and ground support systems while collaborating closely with cross-functional mechanical and electrical engineering teams. You will help bridge the gap between electrical and mechanical disciplines, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to establishing engineering standards and tools across the organization. The position offers a highly hands-on, fast-paced environment focused on rapid prototyping, iterative testing, and solving complex technical challenges that advance hypersonic commercial transport.

Responsibilities

    • Own the electrical power architecture and components for new vehicle development from concept through implementation and testing.

    • Design and develop power electronics systems for supersonic and hypersonic aircraft applications.

    • Collaborate with cross-functional mechanical and electrical engineering teams to architect integrated vehicle power systems.

    • Support systems providing electrical, fluid, and mechanical power to critical aircraft components.

    • Serve as a technical bridge between electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines.

    • Design flight hardware as well as required ground support and test equipment.

    • Evaluate, select, and integrate commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and custom hardware solutions.

    • Work directly with vendors and suppliers to identify and develop suitable components and systems.

    • Mentor junior engineers and help establish engineering standards, tools, and best practices across the team.

    • Support hands-on hardware assembly, integration, troubleshooting, and testing activities.

    • Participate in rapid prototyping, iterative development, and fast-paced build/test cycles.

    • Contribute to advancing propulsion and power system capabilities for next-generation hypersonic transport vehicles.

Requirements

  • BS Electrical Engineering or Mechanical/Aerospace with significant industry experience working with development of electrical component & systems
  • 5+ years of experience in multiple of the following areas: Battery design, motor controller design, harness design and fabrication, design for high EMI environments and appropriate mitigations, power conditioning, communication hubs/busses, bus converters, and PCB layout

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Direct experience working with high-voltage DC systems and components (e.g., batteries, motors, generators).
  • Hands-on experience with HV systems, including proper safety procedures and precautions.
  • Strong working knowledge of aerospace systems engineering practices, including requirements development, verification and validation, component qualification and acceptance testing, system diagramming/modeling, and risk management.
  • Experience executing hardware test and certification campaigns.
  • Proficiency with relevant software tools and programming languages such as Python, Capital Harness, Siemens NX/Teamcenter, and Altium Designer.
  • Experience with simulation and test tools (e.g., Fluke process meters, ammeters, Simulink, ANSYS).
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as IPC-620, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-704, MIL-HDBK-516C, MIL-STD-464D, and DO-160G.
  • Demonstrated project experience designing high power (>5kw) electronic components and or distributed systems
  • Strong analysis and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience working with avionics devices and communication protocols (CAN bus, RS-422, ARINC 825) and connectors (e.g., D38999).
  • Strong ability to collaborate across mechanical and electrical engineering domains.
  • Proven experience contributing to engineering project teams in fast-paced environments.
