Hermeus is an aerospace and defense technology company founded to radically accelerate air travel by delivering hypersonic aircraft. The company aims to develop hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. This approach has been validated through design, build, and test of the company’s first combined turbojet-ramjet engine and is now being scaled through its first flight vehicle program, Quarterhorse. Hermeus is also developing Darkhorse — an uncrewed hypersonic aircraft designed to deliver unique asymmetric capabilities to the warfighter.
In this role, you will take on a leadership position, driving the development and optimization of structural components, mentoring junior analysts, and ensuring cutting-edge solutions align with our mission for high-performance and safe aircraft.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct and oversee detailed analyses of aircraft structures using advanced finite element analysis (FEA) and classical methods, ensuring structural integrity under extreme loading conditions specific to hypersonic environments
- Provide technical guidance to the structures team, reviewing analysis methods and results to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with project requirements
- Collaborate with materials engineers to evaluate and incorporate advanced materials and fabrication techniques suitable for high-speed applications
- Lead optimization efforts for structural designs in collaboration with design, aerodynamics, and propulsion teams, balancing performance, manufacturability, and weight efficiency
- Define and oversee structural testing campaigns, including test planning, execution, and validation of analysis models
- Prepare high-level technical reports, analysis summaries, and presentations for both internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies
- Mentor and develop junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence
- Act as a key interface between the structures team and other engineering disciplines, ensuring seamless integration of structural designs within the overall aircraft system
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- 5 or more years of experience in structural analysis, with a proven track record in the aerospace industry
- Mastery of FEA software (e.g., ANSYS, NASTRAN, Abaqus) and proficiency in CAD tools (e.g., NX, CATIA, SolidWorks)
- In-depth knowledge of aerospace materials, including composites, advanced alloys, and thermal protection systems
- Strong background in analyzing and designing for extreme environments such as high temperatures and dynamic loads
- Proven ability to lead and manage projects, mentor team members, and provide strategic input to organizational goals
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly to diverse audiences
- Innovative problem solver with a track record of tackling challenging engineering problems.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Extensive experience with high-speed or hypersonic vehicle structures strongly preferred.
