Hermeus is an aerospace and defense technology company founded to radically accelerate air travel by delivering hypersonic aircraft. The company aims to develop hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. This approach has been validated through design, build, and test of the company’s first combined turbojet-ramjet engine and is now being scaled through its first flight vehicle program, Quarterhorse. Hermeus is also developing Darkhorse — an uncrewed hypersonic aircraft designed to deliver unique asymmetric capabilities to the warfighter.
In this role, you will lead the design, analysis, and optimization of airframe structures for our hypersonic aircraft, ensuring they meet all safety, performance, and regulatory requirements. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to drive innovation and ensure the structural integrity of our cutting-edge vehicles.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the development and optimization of airframe structural components and systems, ensuring they meet performance, weight, and manufacturability targets.
  • Perform and oversee detailed structural analyses using advanced finite element analysis (FEA) tools and classical methods to validate designs under various loading conditions.
  • Collaborate with materials engineers to identify and select appropriate materials that meet design requirements for strength, weight, and durability in hypersonic environments.
  • Develop and oversee structural testing plans, including static and dynamic tests, to validate analysis results and ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with aerodynamics, propulsion, manufacturing, and systems engineering teams to ensure integrated and efficient aircraft design.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and documentation detailing design methodologies, analysis results, and recommendations for design improvements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 4 or more years of experience in structural engineering within the aerospace industry.
  • Proven track record of leading structural design projects from concept through production.
  • Expertise in finite element analysis (FEA) software such as ANSYS, NASTRAN, or similar tools.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., CATIA, NX) for designing and reviewing structural components.
  • Strong understanding of aerospace materials, including composites and high-temperature alloys.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage engineering teams, with excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical challenges.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in structural engineering within the aerospace industry with a focus on high-speed or hypersonic vehicles.
