Hermeus is an aerospace and defense technology company founded to radically accelerate air travel by delivering hypersonic aircraft. The company aims to develop hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. This approach has been validated through design, build, and test of the company’s first combined turbojet-ramjet engine and is now being scaled through its first flight vehicle program, Quarterhorse. Hermeus is also developing Darkhorse — an uncrewed hypersonic aircraft designed to deliver unique asymmetric capabilities to the warfighter.
As an Avionics Responsible Engineer, you will use your expertise in an avionics-related engineering field, systems engineering fundamentals and program management skills to deliver systems which accomplish a multitude of vehicle functions.
Using experience in systems engineering activities for high-assurance products, you will perform use-case analysis, requirements capture and allocation, architectural analysis and design, verification, and validation efforts. In a safety engineering role, you will develop safety requirements and deliverables such as Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). Leading design reviews (SRR, CoDR, PDR, TRR, CDR) will be a familiar activity for you to surface risks and build confidence in direction amongst program teams.
Using your skills as a program manager, you will be managing the product development process - including defining project timelines, milestones, resourcing plans, and tracking progress. Leveraging a deep technical background in avionics software, hardware, systems, or test, you will influence team technical priorities and strategy through data-driven contributions. You can clearly explain program goals, desired outcomes, risks/issues, mitigation planning and build novel solutions to project challenges.

About You:

  • In-depth technical experience in a discipline related to avionics engineering (software, hardware, EWIS, integration, RF, etc.).
  • Experience developing and interpreting safety requirements and analysis deliverables such as Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Working practical knowledge of aerospace systems engineering practices (e.g. requirements development, verification methods, functional decomposition, diagramming and modeling techniques, risk and opportunity management).
  • Familiarity with assurance processes for development of complex aircraft systems (e.g. RTCA DO-178C, RTCA DO-254, SAE ARP4754A/B, SAE ARP4761).
  • Experience in using Requirements and Configuration Management tools such as IBM Rational Dynamic Object-Oriented Requirements System (DOORS), JIRA, Bitbucket, Bamboo, and Collaborator.
  • Ability to think strategically and tactically and to build consensus to make programs successful.
  • Ability to clearly communicate the status of avionics system development to technical review boards, program leadership, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Proven experience leading a technical team of peers to field hardware or software products.
