Hermeus is a startup developing hypersonic aircraft to radically accelerate air travel. At Mach 5, more than twice the speed of the supersonic Concorde, passengers will be able to cross the Atlantic in 90 minutes. On the path to hypersonic passenger aircraft, Hermeus is partnering with government agencies including the US Air Force and NASA to develop a series of autonomous aircraft that derisk the technology and solve urgent national security challenges. These products provide the data and confidence necessary to certify, produce, operate, and maintain safe and comfortable commercial aircraft. Hypersonic aircraft have the potential to create trillions of dollars of new global economic growth per year, unlocking significant resources that can be utilized to solve the world’s greatest problems.
We are seeking an experienced Principal Embedded Systems Engineer to join Hermeus, ahypersonic aircraft startup company. The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers, and pilots to create cutting-edge avionics and flight control systems for our aircraft. This role will specifically focus on hardware in the loop simulation, avionics firmware design and implementation, and embedded software development and testing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of embedded systems for our aircraft, including avionics, flight control, and communication systems.
  • Develop and implement software and hardware architectures for embedded systems.
  • Design and execute hardware and software integration plans.
  • Design, build, and conduct hardware in the loop simulations to verify the functionality and performance of the embedded systems.
  • Design and implement firmware for microcontrollers and other embedded devices.
  • Develop and test embedded software using industry-standard tools and techniques.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot system issues, including hardware and software faults.
  • Collaborate with other teams to ensure the integration of systems and components.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation for all embedded systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in embedded systems design and development.
  • Strong experience with software and hardware development, including embedded software programming, firmware design, and hardware in the loop simulation.
  • Experience with avionics and flight control systems is highly preferred.
  • Experience with real-time operating systems, device drivers, and hardware interfaces.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, Modbus, MIL-STD-1553, and ARINC.
  • Experience with industry-standard development tools, such as Python, C/C++, and assembly.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
