About the role:

Are you a PhD student in Industrial-Organizational Psychology looking to apply your training in a real-world setting? Do you want to work with a team of experienced I-O psychologists at the cutting edge of technology and talent assessment?

HackerRank is seeking a part-time intern to join our I-O Psychology team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to both customer-facing projects and strategic internal initiatives, while gaining first-hand experience working in a fast-paced SaaS company.

You’ll support efforts to design, validate, and deliver technical assessments used in hiring for some of the world’s most in-demand developer roles. You’ll also help build scalable internal processes and contribute to research that informs both product strategy and thought leadership. In short, you’ll get a front-row seat to the evolving world of tech hiring and how I-O psychology shapes it.

What will you do?

  • Support customer projects by assisting with job analysis, validation studies, and assessment implementation for technical roles
  • Analyze HackerRank product data (e.g., scores, completion times, usage patterns) to uncover insights and support customer recommendations
  • Contribute to the creation of reports, slide decks, and other deliverables for both internal and external audiences
  • Participate in the development of scalable tools, templates, and protocols to support our professional services operations
  • Conduct background research and data analysis to support customer and product initiatives
  • Collaborate with and learn from experienced I-O psychologists and internal stakeholders across our Go-to-Market Team

What you bring:

  • PhD student in Industrial-Organizational Psychology who has completed coursework and comprehensive exams (i.e., ABD status)
  • Strong foundation in employee selection, including:
    • Psychometrics and measurement theory
    • Validation strategies (e.g., content, criterion-related)
    • Familiarity with the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures and related EEO regulations
  • Proficiency in statistical reasoning and tools (e.g., R, SPSS)
  • Strong technical writing and synthesis skills
  • Experience using Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude) to drive efficiency and repeatability in technical writing, research synthesis, or task automation
  • Comfort working in applied, fast-paced environments with multiple concurrent priorities
  • A collaborative spirit and openness to feedback, mentorship, and learning

Bonus Skills:

  • Demonstrated use of GenAI to create scalable, repeatable processes (e.g., reusable prompts, content templates, or research workflows)
  • Experience with technical, software development jobs or software development concepts
  • Familiarity with SaaS business models or tech environments
  • Experience contributing to SIOP proposals, blogs, or other thought leadership content
  • Familiarity with how AI is changing technical work and talent assessment
