The Plant Cost Accountant will be responsible for overseeing cost accounting functions for our Rochester, NY facility, ensuring accurate financial reporting, cost analysis, and inventory and working capital management. Reporting to the Management Accounting Manager, this role will work closely with the Head of Supply Chain to support operational efficiency and strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and experienced in manufacturing cost accounting, with a passion for supporting sustainable innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cost Accounting & Analysis:
- Prepare and maintain standard cost systems; update standards periodically based on operational and market changes.
- Analyze variances (material, labor, and production) and provide actionable insights to management.
- Prepare and analyze cost reports, budgets, and forecasts to support operational and financial planning.
- Monitor and report on production costs, identifying opportunities for cost optimization and efficiency improvements.
- Maintain accurate records of fixed assets, including tracking asset acquisitions, disposals and depreciation in accordance with company policy and accounting standards.
- Inventory and working capital Management:
- Oversee inventory accounting, including valuation, reconciliation, and cycle counts.
- Collaborate with the supply chain team to ensure accurate tracking of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods.
- Support inventory audits and resolve discrepancies in coordination with supply chain and operations teams.
- Perform monthly and annual inventory reconciliations with toll manufactures, Rochester site and third party warehouses
- Financial Reporting & Compliance:
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports related to plant operations for review by the Management Accounting Manager (Includes quarterly forecast and annual budget).
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company policies in all cost accounting activities.
- Assist in internal and external audits, providing documentation and support as needed.
- Assist in month-end and year-end closing activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement support.
- Collaboration with Supply Chain:
- Partner with the Head of Supply Chain to align cost accounting with supply chain strategies, including procurement, production planning, and logistics.
- Provide financial insights to support supply chain decisions, such as vendor selection and process improvements.
- Monitor and report on supply chain-related costs, through purchase order review.
- Collaborate with supply chain to maintain item master records, including part numbers, descriptions, units of measures, costing methods and formulas (BOM)
- Monitor Cash-flow related to plant activity
- Process Improvement:
- Identify and implement improvements in cost accounting processes and systems to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
- Support the development of KPIs and metrics to track plant performance and cost trends.
- Contribute to cross-functional projects aimed at improving operational and financial performance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; 3-5 years of experience in cost accounting, preferably in a manufacturing or biotechnology environment.
- Strong understanding of standard costing, variance analysis, and inventory management.
- Proficiency in ERP systems, D365 preferred and advanced Excel skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, particularly supply chain and operations.
- Strong communication skills to present financial data and insights to non-financial stakeholders.
- Knowledge of GAAP and experience with financial audits.
