About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.
Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.
We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.
Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.
If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.
The Software Engineering team is seeking an exceptional Industrial Control Software Engineer to contribute to the design, implementation, testing, installation and commissioning of the control systems for SPARC, manufacturing, and R&D projects. The SPARC industrial control systems will orchestrate the SPARC facility, bringing together hundreds of subsystems and achieving high availability for SPARC operations, while control systems for manufacturing and R&D will build, test, and assemble magnets and other components for SPARC, and the next generation of hardware for ARC.

This team member will:

  • Develop software for PLCs, SCADA applications, and associated toolchains
  • Contribute to the software development lifecycle for control and data acquisition software across SPARC
  • Write and maintain the documentation of SPARC software functional requirements from design engineers, operations engineers, and plasma physicists
  • Work with instrumentation and controls engineers to specify hardware components and integrated systems for control and measurement systems
  • Support SPARC system integration, commissioning, and plasma fusion operations

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Several years of experience with industrial control systems and automation technologies or embedded systems
  • Experience with Siemens S7-1500 PLCs and TIA portal
  • Experience with Beckhoff PLCs and TwinCAT
  • Experience designing and building SCADA/HMI, particularly Ignition
  • Proficiency with IEC 61131-3 languages, particularly Structured Text / SCL.
  • Experience gathering requirements, function definition and decomposition, technical writing and documentation
  • Knowledge and experience with software development lifecycle - QA, version control, unit testing, commissioning and maintenance

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Other programming skills, such as C++, Python
  • Linux
  • Experience with Profinet, Profibus, S7, OPC UA, Modbus, BACnet, UDP, other communication protocols
  • Familiarity with IEEE, IEC standards.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, sitting, etc. for extended periods of time
  • Adhere to safety protocols for safety hazards for heat, cold, and noise
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
  • #LI-Onsite
