Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.
The RT Level 3 Engineer at Commonwealth Fusion Systems will play a crucial role in developing and overseeing radiographic testing (RT) on the production floor, at external vendor sites, as well as during the construction of the SPARC project.
This position requires a strong understanding of both the physics and practical application of radiography. A firm understanding and previous use of industry codes, specifications, best industry practices, and ability to review and implement industry research will be necessary in order to succeed in this position.
This position will ensure that CFS operates at the highest standards of safety, compliance, and quality in all RT-related activities by applying their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact our CFS mission.

This team member will:

  • Oversee all technical aspects and performance of RT inspections on the production floor, ensuring safety and compliance with industry standards
  • Lead the development of automated image processing tools to evaluate radiographic images for compliance with CFS quality requirements
  • Develop, review, and maintain RT procedures and adapt them to meet the specific needs of the SPARC project
  • Work with the mechanical engineering team to develop tools to improve current RT processes and design custom in-house system solutions for new inspection needs
  • Evaluate the knowledge level of the NDT technicians and determine the knowledge gaps and develop and manage training programs for NDT technicians in radiographic testing techniques, ensuring high skill levels and understanding
  • Work with the Engineering teams to review and recommend inspection requirements
  • Perform regular audits of RT processes for compliance with regulatory and company standards
  • Provide support and guidance to NDT technicians, resolving technical questions and issues
  • Report on inspection results, trends, and process improvements
  • Oversee RT needs at vendor locations, ensuring consistency and quality of external inspections
  • Supervise RT activities during the construction phase of the SPARC project, coordinating with project managers and construction teams
  • Collaborate with the Senior NDT Level 3 Engineer to optimize inspection strategies and ensure alignment with project goals.
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis and support the development of Corrective Actions for non-conformances
