Cellino Biotech, Inc. is an innovation- and value-driven, venture-capital-backed biotechnology company pioneering a transformative platform for manufacturing cell-based therapies. The company was founded by a team of interdisciplinary, entrepreneurial scientists and engineers with expertise in laser physics, biology, software development, optics, precision instrumentation, and business.

The Mechanical Engineer – Consumables and Fabrication role owns the design and manufacturability of consumables that support Cellino's manufacturing platform, including single-use fluidic assemblies and cell-culturing chambers, and supports the mechanical design and fabrication of the platform itself. This person will design and improve components, fixtures, and tooling, and bring a manufacturing engineering mindset to scaling these designs from R&D prototypes toward reliable, repeatable production. The ideal candidate is a mechanical engineer who enjoys both design and hands-on build work, consistently seeks ways to improve designs and streamline operations, uses AI tools to work faster and smarter, and communicates clearly with engineers, scientists, technicians, and leadership.

This is a full-time, in-person engineering role. The Mechanical Engineer will be a member of the engineering group and report to Blair Morad, Senior Director of Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and iterate mechanical components and assemblies for single-use fluidic assemblies and cell culturing chambers
  • Drive design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly improvements to consumables and cell culturing chambers in collaboration with R&D and other engineering teams
  • Design fixtures, jigs, and tooling that improve throughput, yield, and consistency of assembly
  • Perform engineering analysis to support design decisions, including tolerance analysis, materials selection, and design verification testing
  • Own manufacturing processes for consumables and cell culturing chambers, from component preparation through assembly, inspection, and release
  • Define and track process metrics such as yield, cycle time, and scrap, and use data to identify and prioritize improvements
  • Develop inspection and test methods, including acceptance criteria, leak and pressure testing, and dimensional inspection
  • Lead root-cause investigations of design and build failures, and implement corrective actions
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings, specifications, PFMEAs, test protocols, SOPs, and technical reports
  • Select and qualify components and suppliers, and define specifications for purchased and custom parts
  • Plan and support scale-up of consumable and cell culturing chamber production, including preparation for future GMP manufacturing
  • Support mechanical design, fabrication, and integration of platform subsystems, including definition of cable and harness builds
  • Leverage AI tools and agentic workflows to accelerate design iteration, documentation, data analysis, and process automation
  • Direct and train technicians and contract assemblers on assembly processes and quality standards
  • Present technical findings, design proposals, and recommendations to cross-functional teams and leadership

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field with 1-5 years of experience in single-use consumable manufacturing.
  • Experience designing mechanical components or assemblies through prototype and build, ideally in medical devices, bioprocess, or life science instrumentation
  • Proficiency in CAD (e.g., SolidWorks) and the ability to create engineering drawings using GD&T
  • Working knowledge of tolerance analysis, materials selection, and design for manufacturing and assembly
  • Hands-on prototyping, build, and fixture design experience
  • Familiarity with process improvement and problem-solving methods (e.g., root-cause analysis, PFMEA, Lean)
  • Comfort analyzing data to drive decisions (Excel, Python, JMP, Minitab, or similar)
  • Experience using AI tools and agentic workflows to support engineering work, such as design exploration, documentation, analysis, or task automation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present technical work clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Organized and reliable, with an ability to work independently, deliver results consistently, and take ownership and responsibility for their work scope

Nice to Have

  • Manufacturing engineering experience, including process development and scale-up
  • Experience with single-use bioprocess components (tubing, bags, connectors), cell culturing chambers, or microfluidic devices
  • Experience designing plastic parts for injection molding or other high-volume manufacturing processes
  • Exposure to GMP, ISO 13485, design controls, or process validation (IQ/OQ/PQ)
  • Cell culture or aseptic technique experience
  • Experience with writing and interpreting Python code for automation and data analysis
  • Proficient with microscopes and other optical and mechanical measuring systems
  • Familiarity with lab automation equipment

Actual compensation is determined based on experience, education, role-specific competencies, internal equity with employees in similar positions, and employer-verified market data provided by an independent third-party partner. In addition to base salary, Cellino offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes equity compensation, medical, dental, and vision coverage, childcare support, a family leave program, flexible time off, commute subsidies, and more.
