We’re looking for an experienced Associate Director of Facilities Engineering & Maintenance to oversee our facilities operations, engineering and maintenance functions, construction and space planning projects, and building management relationships. This leader will ensure our facilities are safe, efficient, well maintained, and aligned with company needs — while stewarding the teams and long term strategies that keep our environment running at its best.
*This is a fully onsite role based in Emeryville, CA.
Responsibilities:
Team & Operations Leadership
- Lead the Facilities, Engineering & Maintenance, Warehouse & Shipping, and Custodial Services teams.
- Develop and execute a facilities lifecycle monitoring roadmap.
- Oversee planned maintenance, capital improvements, and ongoing facilities operations.
Facilities Projects & Space Management
- Lead all construction, renovation, and modification projects, ensuring compliance, quality, and timely execution.
- Manage office relocations, space planning, and furniture layout as needed.
- Support the revitalization and long term planning of Amyris spaces.
- Building Systems & Equipment
- Ensure proper performance and timely repair of lab and office equipment.
- Identify and troubleshoot physical plant issues, recommending cost effective solutions.
- Monitor utility usage and propose initiatives to reduce cost and environmental footprint.
Liaison & Compliance
- Serve as the primary point of contact with building management, overseeing permitting, construction approvals, repairs, parking management, and invoice review.
- Manage work requisitions and ensure timely follow through.
- Partner with HR, EH&S, and IT to maintain and improve disaster recovery plans.
- Act as an active member of the Safety Committee.
Security & Risk Management
- Oversee the company’s security program and coordinate additional security services as needed.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
- 10+ years of facilities leadership and people management experience.
- 10+ years of experience in facilities maintenance, ideally in a biotech or laboratory environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong background in construction and project management.
- Technical proficiency across general maintenance systems, including electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and energy management.
- Experience leading space moves, build outs, and complex facilities projects.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.
- Experience working closely with cross functional teams such as HR, IT, and EH&S.
- Demonstrated ability to manage vendor relationships, budgets, contracts, and external partners.
- Solutions oriented leader with strong judgment, follow through, and attention to detail.
Physical Qualifications:
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, and reach regularly throughout the day.
- Ability to lift or move up to 65 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to operate tools or equipment requiring close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to work in laboratory, mechanical, and office environments as needed.
The salary range for this role is: $156,000 to $196,000.
Amyris is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. Salary offers are made based on internal equity and market analysis, and will vary based on the candidate’s skills, depth of experience and specific work location.
