Amyris is seeking a Temporary Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to provide hands-on EHS support for our Emeryville laboratory and pilot plant facilities. This contractor role is ideal for an experienced EHS professional who enjoys being on the floor, partnering directly with scientific and operations teams, and making an immediate impact.
In this 3‑month assignment, you’ll help ensure our teams continue to operate safely and in compliance with all applicable regulations. You’ll contribute to day‑to‑day EHS operations, inspections, waste management programs, and ongoing safety initiatives in a fast‑paced scientific environment.

Responsibilities:
EHS Compliance & Inspections
- Conduct site walkthroughs and safety inspections to ensure compliance with Cal OSHA, EPA, and local regulations
- Inspect chemical storage, housekeeping, hazardous waste, and biowaste areas
- Document findings, develop corrective actions, and track closure using JIRA
Chemical & Inventory Management - Maintain accurate chemical inventories for labs and pilot plant areas
- Collect and reconcile inventory logs on a bi weekly basis
- Update chemical management databases and replace inventory logs as needed
- Support procurement of EHS and environmental supplies
Hazardous & Medical Waste Management
- Oversee hazardous and medical waste storage, labeling, inventory, and disposal
- Coordinate bi weekly waste pickups with disposal vendors
- Prepare waste inventories, manage manifests, and track return documentation
- Support lab personnel with proper waste disposal procedures
- Create new waste profiles and coordinate approvals with vendors
Incident Investigation
- Investigating incidents and near misses
- Identify root causes and recommend corrective and preventive actions
- Track incident follow up actions to completion
Emergency Preparedness
- Support emergency response readiness, including fire drills
- Assist with emergency communications using site alert systems
Safety Programs & Risk Management
- Support safety programs including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Hazard Communication, and Confined Space Entry
- Perform LOTO field audits
- Assist with ergonomic evaluations and risk assessments
- Support lab and pilot facility projects, permitting, and safety system implementation
- Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and required EHS documentation
Vendor Coordination
- Coordinate EHS service vendors (lab coats, first aid kits, prescription safety glasses)
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Environmental Sciences or a related field
- 5–7 years of EHS experience in laboratory, industrial, or process environments
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Excellent communication, organization, and follow up skills
- EHS certifications such as ASP, CSP, CIH, CCPSC, or similar
- Experience using JIRA or similar tracking systems
- Experience supporting laboratory and pilot plant operations
Additional Details:
- This role requires onsite presence for all scheduled workdays
- Working safely onsite on a regular and predictable basis is an essential function of this position
The salary range for this role is : $48.08/hr. to $60.58/hr.
