Lead Safety Systems Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer to lead critical system design, safety, and validation initiatives across our product portfolio. This role combines technical leadership in systems engineering with specialized expertise in safety-critical systems, requiring deep knowledge of hardware/software integration, hazard analysis, and validation methodologies. The successful candidate will drive cross-functional collaboration to ensure our systems meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance.
Responsibilities
- Safety Systems Leadership
- Hazard Analysis & Risk Management: Lead comprehensive hazard analysis across all system domains, identifying potential failure modes and implementing mitigation strategies
- Safety Validation & Traceability: Establish and maintain end-to-end traceability for all critical safety system validation activities, ensuring regulatory compliance and audit readiness
- Training & Knowledge Transfer: Develop and deliver safety training programs for operators, technicians, and support personnel across multiple machine platforms
- Concept of Operations (ConOps): Define clear operational frameworks for safe machine operation in both core and non-core applications, including:
- Operator roles and responsibilities
- Site requirements and environmental constraints
- Standard operating procedures and emergency protocols
- Safety protocols for diverse operational scenarios
- Systems Requirements & Architecture
- Requirements Translation: Convert high-level product requirements into detailed system specifications for critical hardware components including sensors, compute platforms, networking infrastructure, and control systems
- Cross-Domain Optimization: Drive system-level optimization initiatives that span mechanical, electrical, software, and safety domains to maximize performance while maintaining safety margins
- Design for Excellence: Ensure serviceability, reliability, and manufacturability considerations are integrated into requirements definition and system architecture decisions
- Scalability & Standardization: Develop requirements frameworks that scale effectively across multiple machine types and product variants
- System Observability & Monitoring
- Observability Architecture: Design and implement comprehensive monitoring solutions covering:
- Safety system status and performance
- Overall system health and diagnostics
- Uptime and availability metrics
- Machine performance and operational efficiency
- Data Analytics & Insights: Establish data collection and analysis capabilities to support predictive maintenance and continuous improvement initiatives
- Observability Architecture: Design and implement comprehensive monitoring solutions covering:
- Verification & Validation Excellence
- System-Level Verification: Lead development of comprehensive verification plans to validate critical system specifications including:
- Computational requirements and performance benchmarks
- Environmental operating conditions and limits
- Mechanical shock and vibration specifications
- Communication and networking performance criteria
- Component & System Validation: Design and execute validation programs to ensure systems meet established specifications and safety requirements
- Test Automation: Develop automated test cases and implement continuous testing coverage for safety-critical systems and core functionality
- Validation Documentation: Maintain comprehensive validation documentation to support regulatory submissions and customer requirements
- System-Level Verification: Lead development of comprehensive verification plans to validate critical system specifications including:
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience: 7+ years of systems engineering experience with safety-critical systems.
- Hazard Analysis: Proven experience with hazard analysis methodologies such as FMEA, HAZOP, FTA, etc.
- Integration & Architecture: Strong background in hardware/software integration and system architecture.
- Verification & Validation: Experience with verification and validation processes for complex systems.
- Safety Standards: Knowledge of relevant safety standards and regulatory frameworks.
- Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical teams.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Bonus Qualifications
- Master's degree in Systems Engineering or a related technical field.
- Professional certifications in systems engineering (e.g., CSEP, INCOSE).
- Experience with autonomous systems or robotics applications.
- Knowledge of functional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262, IEC 61508, ISO 13849).
- Experience with test automation frameworks and tools.
- Background in manufacturing or industrial systems.
- Project management experience and PMP certification.
